There is no official story, but this mythical sofa was commissioned by Lord Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, in the 18th century.

He wanted a couch that would help him avoid crumpling his clothes, a sign that he was a man of quality for whom style and appearance were the first mark of distinction of a true lord.

The real Chesterfield is characterized by its buttoned leather and its shape reminiscent of the collar of a coat. After his death, this sofa was bequeathed to his godson, Solomon Dayrolles, who made it available to visitors.

Soon, his guests wanted to get a replica. This way, this sofa returned to the homes of the families of English high society. This style of sofa spread quickly throughout the world thanks to the expansion of the English Empire until the beginning of the 20th century.
